EU Learning Pills for Students
The 12 EU Learning Pills for Students are a series of short educational videos designed to introduce key European Union topics in a clear, accessible and engaging way.
While the EUCLASS training programme offers teachers more in-depth learning content, these five-minute videos provide students with a quick overview of specific EU institutions, policies and opportunities.
The videos can be used independently or integrated into classroom activities. Teachers may use them to introduce a new topic, review key concepts, stimulate discussion, group work and other EU-related activities.
1.Demystifying the EU
Why does the EU seem so complicated, and how can we make sense of it?
Using the idea of a large workplace, this video introduces five key EU institutions as specialised teams with different responsibilities. Students discover how these institutions shape workplace standards, privacy rules, business conditions and other aspects of their future careers.
2.The Story of Europe: A Brief History of European Integration
This video presents Europe as a shared project built through cooperation rather than simply a geographical area. It traces European integration from the devastation of war to economic cooperation, enlargement and the Single Market. Students also explore the four freedoms and consider how European cooperation creates opportunities to live, study and work across borders.
3.The European Parliament
How can 720 elected representatives give a voice to citizens from 27 countries?
This video explains how Members of the European Parliament are elected, organise themselves into political groups and build coalitions to reach a majority. It also shows how Parliament adopts legislation, approves the EU budget and influences rights, working conditions and professional life.
4.Understanding the EU Council
How do 27 countries with different priorities reach common decisions?
This video distinguishes between the European Council, where national leaders set the EU’s overall direction, and the Council of the European Union, where specialised ministers negotiate practical rules. It highlights consensus, the rotating presidency and the importance of negotiation, compromise and shared leadership.a
5.The European Commission
Presented as the “engineering team” of the European Union, the Commission turns political priorities into practical action. This video introduces the College of 27 Commissioners and explains how the Commission proposes legislation, manages EU funding and ensures that common rules are applied fairly. Examples involving workplace safety, environmental standards, Erasmus+ and vocational training show its impact on students’ futures.
6.EU Decisions Explained
This video explains how responsibilities are divided between the EU and its Member States and introduces exclusive, shared and national competences. Students explore unanimity, simple majority and qualified majority voting before following the ordinary legislative process: the Commission proposes a law, while Parliament and the Council amend, negotiate and jointly approve it. The process demonstrates cooperation, balanced representation and compromise in action.
7.The EU Single Market
This video presents the Single Market as a practical system that removes barriers between EU countries through the free movement of people, goods, services and capital. Students discover how shared standards affect professional qualifications, payments, product safety, online shopping and travel. GDPR, mobile roaming, the right to repair and the common USB-C charger provide concrete examples of its everyday impact.
8.EU Solidarity
Solidarity means sharing resources and supporting people, communities and countries when they face difficulties or major changes. This video explores EU action during emergencies, agricultural support, regional development and worker retraining. It also introduces opportunities for young people through Erasmus+, the European Solidarity Corps, funded internships and vocational apprenticeships abroad.
9.The EU and Your Green Future
How will environmental policies transform future professions?
This video introduces the European Green Deal and the EU’s objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Through examples involving electric vehicles, renewable energy, efficient buildings, sustainable agriculture and the Farm to Fork strategy, students explore the new skills and employment opportunities created by Europe’s green transition.
10.EU Security and Defence
Does the European Union have its own army? This video separates common myths from reality, explaining that EU countries retain their national forces while cooperating on shared security challenges. Students learn about the EU’s complementary relationship with NATO, crisis-management missions, cybersecurity and defence research, the European Defence Fund and the goal of strengthening Europe’s capacity to respond to modern threats.
11.Inside the Schengen Area
The Schengen Area allows people to travel across participating countries without regular checks at internal borders, creating important opportunities for work, study and mobility. This video explains why Schengen is not identical to the EU and explores the balance between freedom and security. It also introduces cooperation through Frontex, Europol, shared databases and new digital border-management systems.
12.The EU and You
EU citizenship provides a practical toolbox of rights, protections and opportunities. This video explains how citizens can live, work and train in other EU countries, receive consular assistance abroad and rely on protections concerning equality, non-discrimination and workers’ rights. It also explores Europe’s cultural diversity and EU support for creative sectors through programmes such as Creative Europe.
